A turbo conversion is one of the most exciting upgrades you can do. More power, more torque, more noise, what’s not to love? But before you dive in, it helps to understand what actually makes a turbo setup reliable and enjoyable, not just quick.


Here’s the stuff people don’t always mention when you search for “how to turbo my car”.

1. The Manifold Matters More Than the Turbo

Everyone focuses on turbo size, but the manifold is what controls airflow, spool, and power delivery.

A custom manifold means:

  • Faster spool

  • Better boost control

  • Stronger welds

  • Less cracking

  • Proper wastegate placement


Cheap cast manifolds? They warp, crack and choke the turbo which is the opposite of fun.


2. Cooling Is Everything (Seriously)

Boost creates heat. Lots of it.

That means you need the right:

  • Intercooler size

  • Radiator capacity

  • Oil cooling

  • Fan setup

  • Airflow path


A turbo car with poor cooling is basically a time bomb. A custom cooling system keeps temps under control and the power consistent.


3. Piping, Bracing and Wastegate Placement Make or Break the Build

We’ve seen turbo kits fail because of simple things like:

  • Poor boost pipe routing

  • Pipes rubbing through

  • No manifold bracing

  • Incorrect wastegate angles

  • Weak welds under heat
